This statement represents an inflation of language to create a false sense of fairness. Logically, no one can win if no one loses. When asked who will give the prizes, the Dodo points to Alice. Everyone crowds around Alice calling for a prize. Alice is at a loss about what to do, but in her pocket she finds a box of comfits (mints). She has enough mints for everyone but herself. She also finds a thimble in her pocket. The Dodo takes the thimble. After a short, solemn speech, the Dodo awards the thimble to Alice.

The first question of course was, how to get dry again: they had a consultation about this, and after a few minutes it seemed quite natural to Alice to find herself talking familiarly with them, as if she had known them all her life. Indeed, she had quite a long argument with the Lory, who at last turned sulky, and would only say, “I am older than you, and must know better”; and this Alice would not allow without knowing how old it was, and, as the Lory positively refused to tell its age, there was no more to be said.

Becoming sleepy, she repeats her question, but it becomes reversed in her drowsy state, as she considers whether bats eat cats, concluding that it doesn’t matter either way. But her understanding of the question as an algebraic equation rather than a logical supposition is incorrect. In this instance, Alice equates the question as similar to: If 1 + 2 = 3, then 2 + 1 = 3, which is correct. But, in transposing the verbal equation of cats eating bats to bats eating cats, Alice is obviously in error.
