Levels of educational preparation Programs can operate at both the undergraduate and postgraduate level. At the undergraduate level there is the possibility of designing a curriculum or major in agroforestry. The central feature of such a major would be a course or courses dealing with systems of agroforestry, methods of analysis of systems and/or field situations in which agroforestry is thought to be a potential land-use system. Case studies would be a valuable means of presenting some of this material.

Such an arrangement would easily allow the use of already existing facilities such as land and infrastructure, teaching staff and training materials. It could also promote greater interaction between the related faculties which may bring about useful curricular innovations. While much can be said about the need for development of physical resources for agroforestry education and training at the professional level, the more urgent need appears to be in the strengthening of staff who will teach courses and in the development of training materials.

Such training is currently underway on every continent. This paper addresses the general principles and practices of training in agroforestry focusing on who needs training, what training is required, and designing training programs. The breadth and depth of training required by the various clientele groups villagers, politicians, technicians, and professionals - are quite different. Politicians require broad but rather shallow training in agro[orestry making them aware of the physical and biological constraints, as well as the social and economic aspects of agroforestry.
